After catching The Avengers, I was left with one feeling- Where are the main Black Female Superheroes? Now keep in mind I am not the type that immediately scream racism just because a Nordic tale does not feature a Nakiah or Trayvon but I am always seeing a reoccurring theme in Hollywood and that is the ‘Great White Hope’ followed by the ‘Tall Dark Handsome’ and the ‘Blond Haired Blue Eyed Goddess’ but never a beautiful strong Black American Superhero.
Sorry to bust your bubble but there isn’t any top 10 Black female Super Heroes. To be honest, the only one that really comes to mind is Storm from X-men and if I recall correctly she is technically African and not Black American (don’t make me explain, you know the difference and Halle Berry is mixed). The Avengers has racked in billions without the help of the ‘sistas’ and I believe this is due, in large part, to a systematic weeding out of ‘Black is Beautiful especially Black Women’- just look at television, its hard to spot one Black Male that is attracted to an equally attractive, normal- Black Female.
If a Black Male is in a relationship with a Black Female, its usually followed by screaming, rolling eyes, baby momma drama and much much more. You hardly ever see a healthy Black relationship as depicted by the Cosby Show. Both Marvel and DC have done a pretty terrible job of creating a Black female superhero. I honestly, believe this is because we have a continued media disintegration of the Black Community. Few other communities are ostracized, made fun of and treated like garbage- like black women.
The media attack on Black Women has gone beyond the Big Screen, to music, education, relationships, family and some consider their disenfranchisement Biblical. We inundate young nappy headed children that such characters like Superman with his Caucasian, Midwest, Clean Cut, Country Boy theme or Batman who is represented as this White, Rich, Elitist Guy fighting ‘the dark’ or maybe Ironman who makes little apology for his rich multi-millioniare thrity something white man entitled persona. Look over to women in DC and Marvel and we see the Great Wonder woman who is the epitome of white perfection.
Personally, I have found with the media taking such measures as to discount Black America- I am drawn closer to it. There is something there that they wish us to ignore, weed out or simply kill off. However, despite it all Black continue to strive and succeede- few other ethnicities have endured such a long fight for justice, equality and respect.
