Megamind is a skewing of the Superman basis however this time 2 babies arrived on earth at the same time but one turned out to be a blue super-villain. Megamind features the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, David Crass, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt. .
The issue with Megamind was the concept was pretty interesting and may be a prequel to the Superman/Smallville series but the humor was a hit and a miss. Maybe the problems began in the telling of the Metroman/Megamind rivalry but making Megamind a ‘victim of the system’ is a little off putting for a children’s cartoon. Then they breeze through the childhoods of both Megamind and Metro man, with putting an emphasis on holding grudges and seeking revenge if your related (in your childhood) to being picked on and ostracized. However, the many children may come away with the idea that ‘ If you can’t be successful at being good, then be just as successful at being bad at something.’ Or in other words, if you are better at cheating then studying be the best cheater because that is what you are good at.
Soon, Megamind and his nemesis Metroman grow into adulthood where they have a history of epic battles and Megamind ends up calling prison home, there he is sentenced to +20 life sentences. During these EPIC battles, Megamind always kidnaps Metroman’s “Lois Lane” in this case she is called Roxanne (voiced by Tina Fey). Soon even, “Lois” is tired of the proverbial rescuing the damsel in distress routine, here comes the hero routine.
By engineering, Megamind ends up “killing” Metroman” and achieving everything he’s ever wanted –soon he realizes that there is no purpose i him being bad if he does not have a “good” to contend with. In his quest to create a new superhero to fight he falls in love with “Lois” and as expected, she does not know who he is but quickly finds out.
One of the main problems with the film was that Megamind beat Metroman got everything he wanted within the first hour of the movie. The rest of the movie was spent unravelling that hour. The last hour of the film was just a lot of destruction, fluff and green eyes.
Megaminds ‘black mamba” villain suit was cool. The voice work was suitable, the animation was decent and the story arc for the first hour was interesting.
Although the film was interesting we really expected a laugh out loud, funny animated film . However, throughout the film I let out a brief chuckle or two but nothing was really hilarious. Interestingly, the story becomes more engaging as we delve deeper into Megamind’s heart
The entire film dispels the rumor/movement of ‘It Gets Better’ because for Megamind he embraced his evilness. Overall, we would have enjoyed Megamind more… maybe it’ll be one of those movies that wins me over upon a second viewing – once my expectations are out of the way. Kids will probably enjoy it.
